Inauspicious timing of menarche, or the first menses of a girl, could cause disease. Further, it could mean a shorter life span for her or her husband, or even lead to the birth of bad children. Menses at an inauspicious time is indicative of murderous inclinations in the girl, and could also lead to unchaste behaviour. Girls who get their first period in the evening are likely to become thieves; if it happens after sun set, she would become a prostitute; if it happened at midnight, she may have emaciated breasts, and early widowhood could be her fate.
The prognosis is bleak, but, thankfully, there are remedies for those who have their first period on a Sunday, Tuesday, Saturday or on dates 1,4,6,8,9,12,14, of the month, or on new moon days. Almost no one is spared, but the astrologer's website tells you that it will cost only a few thousands to perform santhi to appease the planets, and to remedy the dosham or defect.
Three astrologers who wrote the above in their Panchangams scheduled to be read in public with pomp and ceremony at the forthcoming Ugadi New Year celebrations on March 23, failed to foresee what was in store for them: they have been hauled to the HRC by women and child rights organisations. The Indian Constitution and International Law protects the dignity of all humans; Indian Penal Law punishes whoever outrages the modesty of women, and Indian law protects the girl child from any attacks on her self esteem and her right to privacy.
