QUETTA: A mob attacked a police station in Pakistan on Saturday demanding a man detained for allegedly desecrating the Quran be handed over, leaving one person dead and 19 with gunshot wounds.

Violence erupted after police arrested a "mentally retarded" man said to have burnt pages of the holy book in Kuchlak, about 16 kilometres north of Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, senior administration official Qambar Dashti told AFP.

"Angry protesters, mostly Afghan refugees, torched several vehicles and pelted police with stones," Dashti said.

North Dakota: Religious Liberation Restoration amendment

How important is this result for the rest of America?

On Tuesday, North Dakotans resoundingly defeated Measure 3, the so-called Religious Liberation Restoration amendment, despite the fact that the measure had the support of the Catholic Church and evangelical leaders in the state.

The rejection of the measure by a 64 to 35 percent vote matters far beyond North Dakota, according to Sarah Stoesz, president of Planned Parenthood in Minnesota and North and South Dakota.

Stoesz believes that the vote should show politicians across the country that some of the loudest church organizations and leaders are not reflecting the views of their followers.

"The idea that religion is under attack is a red herring," Stoesz said. "Politicians should not be afraid to stand up to those making the charges."...

...As it happened, a front-page story in the Fargo Forum on the Saturday before Election Day seemed to show indirectly what happens when religion and profession get too tightly tied.

The story of Trish Cameron, the Moorhead teacher who was not rehired by St. Joseph's Catholic School after telling administrators that she didn't always personally believe in the tenets of the church. For example, she said, she supports the ideas of gays marrying. But she also made it clear that she never brought those beliefs into her fifth-grade classroom.

Cameron, who had taught at the school for 11 years, was fired for holding those beliefs.

An Oregon man is in a critical condition with the plague after he was bitten while trying to remove a decaying mouse from the mouth of a stray cat.

The man, who has not been named but is in his 50s, is believed to have caught the disease that rampaged through Europe in the middle ages and is thought to have wiped out between a quarter and a third of the population. In modern times the disease is rare and treatable with antibiotics but can still be fatal.

A local report said the man developed a fever a few days after being bitten on 2 June and was admitted to Crook County hospital...

...Emilio Debess, Oregon's public health veterinarian, said there had been a number of cases of the disease reported in the state since 1934, including four people who had died.

An average of 11 cases of plague are reported in the US each year, according to the World Health Organisation, with around 1,000 to 3,000 cases worldwide.

There are six candidates in race at present including former President APJ Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The other four are Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defense Minister AK Antony, present Vice-President Hamid Ansari, and former Speaker of the lower house of the Parliament Somnath Chatterjee (that makes 2 brahmins, 2 muslims, 1 sikh, and 1 christian). :)

Cat fight at the top of the French Socialist Party

It's all a bit complicated. Ségolène Royal was for many years the partner of François Hollande and mother of his children. In 2007 she was the Socialist Party candidate in the 2007 election, in which she was defeated by Nicholas Sarkozy. It is widely believed that her partner Hollande had wanted to be the candidate himself and resented her comparative success within the party. They split up as a couple.

He went on to become the Socialist candidate this year and is now President.

It appears that his new partner Valerie Trierweiler has issues with Royal.

Now read on.

Quote:

Tensions between the two women continued to spiral despite calls from Mr Hollande's Socialist Party to calm things down and change the subject ahead of Sunday's legislative elections, which the Left is tipped to win.

The row has totally overshadowed the legislative campaign and called into question Mr Hollande's leadership qualities.

It sparked an unprecedented reproach from prime minister Jean-Marc Ayrault who told the First Lady to "know her place" while Party leader Martine Aubry yesterday called on her to be "more discreet"...

...Miss Royal is standing for MP against dissident left-winger Olivier Falorni in La Rochelle. One poll suggests she will be trounced on Sunday as the Right has called on its supporters to back her rival.

President Hollande, who has kept out of the parliamentary campaign, made an exception for his ex-girlfriend by lending her his official support.

This reportedly infuriated Miss Trierweiler, who was yesterday quoted by Le Point as telling her boyfriend: "You took a stand for Royal without telling me. You'll see what I'm capable of!".

Minutes later she fired off a tweet wishing "good luck" to Miss Royal's rival and praising his "selfless commitment".

The opposition Right swiftly denounced the row as "Dallas at the Elysee Palace", saying France's new first couple were intolerably mixing their public and private lives and making a mockery of Mr Hollande's so-called "normal" presidency.
Twice-divorced Miss Trierweiler claimed it was "idiotic" to suggest she had acted out of jealousy of her partner's former companion of 30 years, who she is said to privately call "the nutter from Poitou".

But Le Point quoted her as telling Mr Hollande not to give his ex-girlfriend a plum job as president of the National Assembly, sending him a text message saying: "Anything she gets will be too much."
