Politics and the NHS (in the UK that is)

Just something that amused me. In the wonderful way that has developed of politicians telling reporters before they make a speech what they will say during that speech - why bother speaking at all I wonder - a snippet from the Today programme this morning.

One of the two anchormen, describing what would be forthcoming in the next hour of the programme, announced that they were going to talk to the leader of the opposition about the speech he will be making later today. The burden of the speech was the failure of the present government properly to serve the NHS.

Serve?

I mean I could understand "promote", "look after", "adequately finance" and the rest - but SERVE?

I just love the way that people use words for the knee-jerk reaction they can produce rather that for what they mean. Though I suppose he could mean serve in the sense that one serves at table?
