South African art gallery agrees to remove Zuma penis painting JOHANNESBURG -- A controversial painting showing South African President Jacob Zuma with his penis exposed will no longer be displayed at Johannesburg's Goodman Gallery, after an agreement was struck between the art gallery and Zuma's ruling African National Congress (ANC) party. At a joint news conference Wednesday, ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu and gallery director Liza Essers confirmed that the ANC's court case against the gallery would be dropped. In exchange, the gallery agreed not to display the painting. Essers added that the gallery would also remove an image of the painting from the gallery's website as a gesture of goodwill, The (South Africa) Times reported. The painting, titled "The Spear," is the work of satirical artist Brett Murray. It went on display at the Goodman Gallery earlier this month. ... |
