Context - French Presidential Election.

I think the snippet was on the Today programme, not that it matters: but either the Left-ish candidate or one of his supporters was suggesting that he would get out of his present economic problems by copying the "New Deal" of the early 1930s.

Is it the case that the "New Deal" didn't really work and that the US economy did not really start to recover until industry geared up for wartime production?
