In Florida where I live, community rules state that 60 per cent of our garden visible from the public road has to be grassed. We have to use a certain type of grass – one that is not native to Florida – which we must keep in good condition all year. That means twice-weekly irrigation. We are not allowed artificial grass, nor drought-tolerant native grass. One day it will be too late to wake up and smell the roses, as our irrigation water sources will have run dry. This seems weirdly prescriptive.
